Art games and other collections

Posted by JustinasM - June 30th, 2010

Art games

Good day newgrounders. Today I would like to speak about art games and other collections... blah blah blah. Imagine some more introduction sentences. We all know that you hate to read, so I will just get to the point.

Recently I saw a new and rising game collection "Art games". If you would be kind, I would like to suggest some works to be included there, as the collection is currently rather small. So here are those works:

Menulis - Why? Relaxed atmosphere, not very challenging. Satisfaction coming not from achieving or overcoming, but rather from the actual process of playing. Some freely interpretable symbolism. Interesting execution (animations were hand drawn on scraps of paper, then scanned and put into flash).

Miestas - Why? Similar to above as it is sequel of the above game.

Pragaras - Why? Lots of symbols, thoughts on society. Intended emotion is not fun or happiness, but concern and meditation. Gives some analysis on modern values and virtues.

Those three were the works of our 3j team and I do not want to be some self-centerd advertiser. Here are some works by other people:

Every day the same dream - Why? Again satisfaction not in the overcoming of obstacles, but in the calm and slow process itself. The game has a point of view, expresses the universal values and virtues, which tend to be forgotten (not only these days, it was always so, just in different ways).

The Scale of the Universe - Why? Well this one may be highly debatable, but the main reason I guess is that everything is based on the experience, on the fact of how facanated you feel despite the fact that you can only zoom in or out.

William and Sly - Why? My personal favorite. Beautiful art, laid back atmosphere. The whole fairy tale mood... And so on.

Ok, that is all. If you find that some games lack something to be regarded as "Art games" please express your opinion. After all, art is something that is highly based on personal opinion and lacks a strict definition.

Collections in general

Another thing I was interested in speaking about was collections. It has come to my attention that a lot of games which could be sorted into collections aren't in any. That is why I would like to discuss some of methods newgrounds could use to submit work to collections.

One of them would be author suggested collection. When author submits a work, he could choose a collection which he thinks would fit the game. And then when user clicks "Recommend for a collection" button he would first get the authors suggestion. The user then could choose whether he agrees with the author or not. If he does, his vote goes for the authors sugesstion, if he does not he gets to choose from that outrageous and huge list.

Another would be introducing another set of points for collection submitters, similar to blam and protection points. They would increase voting power or collection voting power or something like that. Or maybe have some diffirent secrets tree which would unlock with proper collection votes. Like blam and save points the user would get points only if the work is submitted to the collection he suggested.

And lastly if collections would be revived, there would be a need to browse them easily and find what you are looking for with as little digging as possible. Now I will not get into this, so wait for two weeks until I am allowed to post on front page again. I'll give a thought about how to sort work within a collection.

Please share your thoughts about things that I wrote, whether it is about art games or about collections in general.

Hey, I recommended your games for the collection. I really liked Menulis back when it came out. It was memorable, you know?

There's a new redesign coming up, so maybe that'll fix some of the issues with the collections. They always felt like a side addition to the site to me, and they're kind of random. There's a new genre system that's been appearing on a lot of entries and I'm betting the redesign will integrate that more.

Yeah, I know about redesign. Thats why I'm doing public discussions. After all, redesign functions will mainly be used by general public, that's why I think more discussions on that will bring a much better content in the end. Maybe some of NG redesign developers will see this thread and make out some new good stuff, maybe they are already doing such changes. And thanks for vote!

Ugh I wish it wasn't called the Art Games section......Good recommendations though

Art games just sounds like 'Games with a Higher Purpose'

Thanks for the suggestions! It definitely gets hard to draw the line with some games... Some games feel like a slippery slope to opening the floodgates for similar stuff that doesn't quite fit what I think people expect to find when looking for "Art Games"... But it all is pretty subjective.

The redesign will finally put our genre data to use, so for example when your game is specified as "Adventure" in your submission form, it will finally now show up on the Adventure games section and not have to be put there manually.

I didn't set up Art games as a genre since an art game really can be centered in a traditional genre such as a platformer or a point and click adventure... In the future I expect that people will tag their games with "artgame" and then users will be able to view tag results for "artgame" - we could ultimately have a list of popular gaming tags people can browse.

Yep, when I saw that "Art games" aren't among genres I thought that the main reason for this is the fact that Art game does not define the gameplay mechanics but rather the other details such as mood or a way of development execution. I'm really eager to hear how will we be able to sort out stuff while browsing genres/collections, but I'll wait as I intend to make my next FP post about that topic :). Good luck on your redesign works, I'm really eager to see it all!

I strongly disagree with the whole "art games" thing
Who decides which games are art and which are not? What makes a game "arty" enough?

I believe the word art is one of the most useless words in human history. Words are used for communication thus in everyones head they must have a similar meaning. And when speaking about art, everyone has a diffirent opinion on what is art and what is not. Art games section pretty much has a proper definition of what you will find inside, quote: "The intent isn't necessarily to provide the player with a challenge or addictive mechanic, but rather to convey a message, elicit an emotion or create a memorable experience.". I could not think of any other proper name of how to define this collection. That is why this is a definiton of words "Art games" within the boundaries of newgrounds website. Beyond this website art is once again an undefined word which changes meaning based on someones opinion. Long story short, if you go to the "Art games" collection and find there what you expect to find the purpose of a collection is served for you. If the majority of users find what they were looking for but you don't, well the developers/administrators of the site can't be good to everyone, it's simply impossible. And now I believe that most of the people who click that collection find what they expect to find based on the name. Thus I think that there isn't a reason to strongly dissagree with something here, because the purpose of collection isn't to define art in universal standarts (which as I mention before don't even exist).

yeah, tom, the tags seem to work best. i'd say if you click 'adventure games' it would just put in a search for all the games that people tag their game with 'adventure'

a lot of games nowadays are plenty of different genres so i wouldn't be surprised if i came across the same game in different categories
